If you put these pieces of mail end to end, they would reach from the Earth to the moon 117 times (or over 58 round trips)! It would take 217,252,350 (217 Million) trees to make this amount of paper. To deliver all of this mail, the distance is equal to 47,666 times around the Earth! This doesn't include the additional aircraft fuel and distances needed to fly the mail between cities.
(Local only.)
Delivering all of this paper is extremely inefficient. According to the U.S. Government Accounting Office's January 2001 Report, "Postal productivity has increased only about 11 percent over the past three decades, despite substantial investments in automation and information technology."
